WYOMING 2025 RECOMMENDATIONS
-
25/27 is an area known for high numbers of elk spread from top to bottom. Whether you want to drive around big open BLM sage flats, glass cedar hills, or pound timber high country, there are places to look for elk in these two units.
The biggest downside is the rifle season opener can be crowded in the key areas elk are easily accessed. It’s suggested to either scout early and kill on the opener or possibly come look for bachelor bulls as they have broken off from herds at the end of October.
Bull quality is fair to good, but unfortunately, giants are not known to crop up out here unless you are in the timber because the top bulls in the low-country tend to get found each year.
-
Unit 41 holds a lot of elk, but the timing of this hunt can make mature bulls tough to find.
The key in a unit 41 hunt is glassing the large rim-rock canyons first thing in the morning to find a bull you want to kill, then taking all day to get over to a position to kill them.
It’s got good quality and the opportunity for a booner exists, but you will have to work for it physically.
-
Unit 99 holds a lot of elk, but is mostly a thick timber unit. If you want to hunt it early, you will have to go to the timberline pockets up high to be able to see them with regularity.
The middle elevations in unit 99 are characterized by thick blown-down timber that is nearly impossible to travel though in places. If going to the high country is not of interest, then hunting the last week of season and looking at the lower transition country canyons and rock hills is most effective. There is a chance at a giant in this unit.
Consider applying for the Region L buck deer tag to double up your hunts, and/or have Chris put the 25 type 4 license as a 2nd choice if you would like to have a cow tag along on the hunt (but match season dates to hunt dates first).
