RECOMMENDATION: MEDICINE BOW

UNIT 11 (TYPE 9) | 100% AT 11 PTS

SEPT. 1 - SEPT. 30, 2025 | 75 TAGS (JUST ARCHERY)

PROS:

More rolling terrain, plenty of road access, and good elk numbers make this a great option. There are enough elk with low hunter numbers that bulls get old, though the area isn’t necessarily known for giants. In the first two weeks of archery season, there are only 75 type 9 hunters afield.

CONS:

After Sept. 15, 200 type 1 hunters and 100 type 4 cow hunters can begin hunting, though usually it’s about 1/3 of all tagholders (~100 total hunters). That can increase the hunter congestion in the mountains, but most of them are not die-hards and getting a little ways off the road will get you out of pressure. This unit can be prone to point-jumping, and we will keep an eye on tag numbers to ensure there aren’t major changes in 2025.

YOUR STARTING POINT PINS

Please keep in mind, these pins are rough areas to start digging around looking for feed, wallows, and of course bugling bulls. The low country state lands can hide elk in the cottonwood river bottoms if you do not catch them in the open. They are also open for cow elk hunting starting August 15th with a rifle if you draw the type 6 license, but remember it is NOT VALID on National Forest or Wick Wildlife Habitat Management Area. Bring waders in case you need to cross any of the rivers in this unit to access the elk.
